Life at LSE (London school of Economics) -선의영 선생님

2014-07-08

The place where I went to first was Bournemouth. Bournemouth is a city in the south part in England and it is famous for its beautiful seaside. I was doing a language course to improve my English so I could enter a private school inEngland. One day, I met my friend in the street. He asked me which university I wanted to go to and I answered without hesitation Oxford university. He seemed to be surpassed with my answer and said to me. Hey, Oxford? Too boring, Havent you heard about LSE (London school of Economics)? Now that school is rising up. It is the best university for Economics and Politics in the UK. I am going there. It was the first time that I had heard the name LSE and at that time, I didnt even imagine that I would actually be studying there in 3 years time.

LSE is not as well-known as Oxford or Cambridge universitles to Koreans. However, LSE is obviously one of the best universitles in the UK, it really is a world class university. (LSE is continuously ranked in the world top 20 universitles.) Especially, in regards to Economics, LSE is a world leading university.

After finishing the language course, I studied in the Repton school, a traditional boarding school in the UK. And I heard from my friend about how famous LSE is in the UK. In relation to Economics, its fame even surpassed that of Oxford andCambridge. However, I stayed with my decision to apply for Oxford becauseOxford was obviously the best university in the UK. However, Oxford rejected my application and I was really disappointed. Fortunately, LSE offered me a place at their university so I decided to go there.

When I started at LSE as my school, many things surprised me about it . The first thing was that I had very little lecture and class hours. In one week, we had just 8hours of lectures and 4 hours of classes. In the lecture, professors or doctors Us the main theory and in the class. an outstanding student doing a Phd taught us and checked our homework. Although we had just 8 hours of lectures, the amount of the material was not small at all. I was surprised about the fact that they taught me the same material which I spent one month to learn in A  level, in just one lecture that laeted for a have , the lectures are so intensive that if you lose your concentration for just one second, you could miss a very essential part of that lecture. Therefore you really have to be awake and use all your concentration for the lectures. For that, you must look after the condition of your body. I have seen many students who have failed to do that and, have fallen asleep in lectures. Most of them didnt get good marks in the exam. In addition, LSE professors and doctors never teach you everything in the lecture. They always want you to think, and their homework often contains the material that you havent fully learned. It requires you to think for a long time and it normally takes about 2~3 hours at minimum. There are also lots of reading lists as well. Therefore, if you are to catch up with all of these, even studying for 24 hours a day wouldnt be enough. Therefore you have to find out your own efficient way of studying. Most students dont study everything instead they find out, and study, the parts which professors or doctors emphasize are important.

Indeed, LSEs courses are really demanding. But LSE life is not all about studying. Just like other universities, various kinds of student unions are available for students and many debate groups, which debate about current social and economic issues, are also availass. In addition, since LSE is one of the world leading universitles, many famous lecturers often visit LSE and give their lectures to the students.

LSE is also one of the most well known universitles to companies in the UK. You normally receive 1 or 2 emails about an intership fair or job fair per week. So if you wish, you can attain various working experiences with the LSE career system. Also, the LSE reputation will help you to get jobs in the UK a lot if you succeed in getting decent grades at LSE.

In addition, LSE is a very international university. You can meet many students from various countries around the world such as the U.S, CanadaGermanyIndia,ThailandChina, etc, and experience their various cultures.

AS mentioned above, LSE gives you many opportunitles to study and experience various cultures and the opportunity to get various job experiences. However, life at LSE is not easy. You have to study, at minimum 6 hours a day, and especially in the exam season, you may have to stay all day and night at a desk studying. There are many students who study overnight in the library in the exam season. LSEs exams are really demanding and difficult. Most students who work really hard often get a two-one (which is the second best grade) and there are many students who fail the exams. However, it means that LSE is that much more of a challenge for you. If you can survive the tough courses of LSE, you will world consider receive all the international benefit that LSE gives. I wish that you knocking the door of LSE and try to become a world leading person just like manypredecessor who graduated from LSE.
