Luckley Boarders experience Korean Culture

Girls from Luckley-Oakfield School in Wokingham enjoyed a real cultural treat on Saturday when the school put on a ‘Korean Day’. The event was run by BEC Education as part of the programme of weekend activities for the school’s boarders.

Head of Boarding Mrs Sandra Dixon said: “The aim of this event was to educate and inform the boarders and staff about Korean culture and give an insight into life, dress and the cuisine of some of our girls' home country”.

The girls watched and took part in presentations about the Korean culture, including how to bow to extended family and dignitaries and how to say “Happy New Year” in Korean.

Some of the school’s Korean boarders also took part in the presentations:  Gi Na(Year 12) gave a demonstration of the country’s leading sport of Taekwondo, inviting one of her fellow students to try some of the moves. The girls demonstrated traditional games and showed a range of musical instruments, including a beautiful rendition by Eun Jung (Year 10) who played a pipe which her mother had made for her. The girls then dressed up in stunning Korean costumes before all the guests were treated to a feast of traditional Korean cuisine

The event was a great success and the girls and staff really enjoyed learning more about Korea.

"I really enjoyed the day. It explained a lot about the Korean culture and how it is celebrated.
I really loved the Korean food"   Ji Soo, Year 9

"I really enjoyed trying on the costumes. I have just been to Korea and today I learned more about traditions and culture." Whitney, Year 13
