10 advices about going to study abroad -길재무 선생님

 

 

Going abroad to study is a decision that should not be taken to lightly as it entails numerous factors that needs to be considered.  Many students will have different reasons for leaving their home country and this obviously means that each individual has different considerations.  There are many advantages and disadvantages of studying abroad and I will try to provide some advice which I hope will help you to make the most of your experience.  The following advices were gained through my experience living and studying outside of Korea.

 

1.     Think about your reasons for moving abroad to study. Reminding yourself about the reasons will help you to get back up when you are down and set you back on your track when you are lost. Make sure that most of your decisions are related to you reason.

 

2.     Concentrate the first few months on English and making friends.  Loneliness and unable to communicate with your peers can make living in a different country difficult.  They are one of the major reasons that people cannot adapt to their new surroundings.  Becoming fluent in English is one of the reasons that you decided to go and study outside Korea.

 

3.     Try to make friends with different nationalities.  This will help you to become a true global leader as understanding a variety of culture will be very beneficial whatever field you decide to work in. Meeting with people around the world is one of the advantages of living outside of Korea.

 

4.     Understanding different accents will help you to become a true globalized person.  You will be working with people all over the world and it is very advantageous to become familiar with the different accents since this could be one of your strengths.  There will be more demand for people who have international awareness rather than just western.

 

5.     Understand the requirements for the year and for the course.  Most schools will inform you about the examination board and provide a syllabus for the year.  Read it through thoroughly and make sure that you understand what you have to study for the year.

 

6.     Ask questions when you do not understand.  The teacher is there to answer your question.  You CAN ask questions and they will answer them sincerely.  Something that you do not understand is not going to be understood when you sleep over it.

 

7.     Always try to answer three more question than what was given to you for homework.  The more practice you have during the term, the less you have to work during the exam time. 

 

8.     Make your own revision note.  Making a cue card sized revision note for all you subjects will decrease the time that you spend on revising for the test.  You do not want to spend valuable time going through the whole book and looking for those parts that you need.  It is rather an easy task as the teachers will have given you the syllabus and as long as you stick to the syllabus, you can never go wrong.  Do not throw them away because you are done with the year, you will need to look at it again for your GCSE or A-level examination.

 

9.     Set your long term and short term goals.  Draw up a road map of how you will attain your goals.  You will need to think about your university major before you start your A-levels as there are specific requirements for specific majors.  You do not want to study for 2 years and realize that you were required to study other subjects to achieve your dreams. Make your goals realistic and attainable.  Achieving each goal will help you feel that you are getting closer to your final goal. 

 

10.   Try to focus on what you want to be and what you are good at.  Students have a tendency to choose subjects that require the least English but do think about whether these subjects are requirements for your university admission as well.

 

Enjoy every aspect of studying abroad.  Experience things that you will never be able to do unless you are there.  You are going on a journey that will decide your future so be prepared for a roller coaster ride.

   

 

 

유학에 대한 10가지 조언

 

 

유학을 가는 결정은 그렇게 쉽게 내릴 수 있는 문제가 아니다 왜냐하면 고려할 사항들이 몇몇 있기 때문이다. 고국을 떠나는 이유는 학생마다 다르기 때문에 고려해야 되는 점들이 개인마다 다를 수 있다. 유학에는 장점과 단점들이 있으며 학생의 경험을 최대한 활용 할 수 있도록 도움이 되기를 바라며 몇 가지의 조언을 하려고 한다. 다음 조언들은 내가 외국에서 생활하고 공부를 하면서 얻은 것들이다.

 

1.     유학을 왜 가는지 생각을 하여라. 이유를 상기하는 것은 넘어졌을 때 일어날 수 있도록 도와 줄 것이고 혹은 길을 잃었을 때 다시 길을 찾을 수 있도록 한다. 대부분의 결정들이 유학 이유와 관련이 있도록 하여라.

 

2.     첫 몇 달은 영어와 친구들을 사귀는데 집중을 하여라. 친구들과 소통을 하지 못하는 것은 타 국가에서 사는 것을 매우 힘들게 할 수 있다.  이 두 가지 이유가 사람들이 자기의 새로운 환경에 적응을 하지 못하는 주요 이유이다. 유학을 가기로 한 결정 이유 중 하나는 영어를 유창하게 하는 것 일 것이다.

 

3.     다른 국적을 가진 사람들과 친구가 되어라.  이것은 너를 진정한 글로벌 리더가 될 수 있도록 도와 줄 것이다.  어떤 분야에서 일하던지 다양한 문화를 이해를 하는 것은 유익하다. 전 세계 사람들을 만날 수 있는 것은 외국에서 공부를 하는 장점 중 하나이다.

 

4.     다양한 다른 억양을 이해를 하는 것은 진정한 글로벌 한 사람으로 만드는 것을 도와 줄 것이다.  차후에 세계를 무대로 하여 국제적으로 일을 할 것인데 다양한 억양에 익숙하다는 것은 그대에게 강점이 될 수 있다.  서구적인 마인드를 가진 사람보다는 국제적은 마인드 혹은 의식을 가진 사람들의 수요가 더 많다.

 

5.     과목 및 학년 별 요구 사항을 이해를 하여라. 대부분의 학교들은 어떤 examination board인지 그리고 각 학년 별 강의 계획서를 제공 할 것이다. 강의 계획서를 꼼꼼히 읽고 한 해 동안 공부 할 것이 무엇인지 이해를 하도록 하여라.

 

6.     이해를 하지 못하면 질문을 하여라.  선생님은 질문을 답하기 위해서 계신다.  질문을 물어보면 성의 것 대답을 해 주실 것이다.  이해가 되지 않는 것은 그 다음날 일어나도 이해가 되지 않을 것이다.

 

7.     주어진 숙제보다는 3 문제를 더 풀도록 하여라.  학기 중 연습을 더 많이 한다면 시험 기간 동안 공부해야 되는 양도 많이 줄어 들 것이다.

 

8.     개인 복습 노트를 만들어라.  모든 과목에 대한 큐카드 크기의 복습 노트를 만들면 시험을 위해 복습하는 시간을 감소 할 수 있을 것이다. 책을 전체적으로 보면서 필요한 부분을 찾는 것에 귀중한 시간을 소비를 하지 않도록 도움을 줄 것이다.  복습 노트를 만드는 것은 생각보다 쉬운 일이다.  학기 초에 받은 강의 계획서에 맞추어서 만든다면 잘못 될 수가 없을 것이다. 연말 최종 시험을 봤다고 버리지 마라 왜냐하면 나중 GCSE 혹은 A-level 시험 볼 때 필요할 것이니까.

 

9.     단기간 및 장기간 목표를 정하여라.  원하는 목표를 어떻게 달성할 수 있는지 road map을 그려라.  A-level을 시작하기 전에 대학 전공을 생각을 해야 된다 왜냐하면 특정 전공에는 특정 요구 사항이 있기 때문이다.  2년을 공부를 한 뒤 내 꿈을 이루기 위해서는 다른 과목을 공부하는 것이 요구된다는 것을 깨닫게 되면 너무 늦다. 목표는 현실적이고 이룰 수 있어야 된다. 목표를 이룰 때마다 최종 목표에 가까워 지는 것을 느낄 것이다.

 

10.   내가 무엇이 되고 싶은지 그리고 무엇을 잘하는지에 집중을 하여라. 영어를 최소로 요구하는 과목을 선택하는 경향이 있는데 이런 과목들이 대학 입학을 위한 요구 사항인지 생각을 해보아라.

 

유학에 모든 면을 즐겨라.  거기가 아니면 즐길 수 없는 것들을 경험을 하여라. 미래를 정하는 여행을 떠나니 롤러코스터를 탈 준비를 하여라.
