Why must it be British education only? -선의영 선생님

 

England is well known as the country of gentleman, with long tradition and history. Despite of its uniqueness and Excellence, the British education is not well-known as much as the American education. However, considering the fact that the universities such as Oxford and Cambridge are majestically ranking in the world top 10 universities, and there are many universities in the UK which have the world wide prestige, the British education would be one of the best education systems in the world.

 

Then, what does make the British education so unique and distinguishable?

1.       The British education focuses on the creative and rational thoughts

In Korean and even American education, which are often said to be the model of developed one, the proportion of the multiple choice questions in the exam is very high, which just requires students to remember the knowledge that they learned from books. However, there are no multiple choice questions in the exam of British education. All questions are essay based and therefore you can never get the high marks if you just memorized the contents in the books. In the exam, the ability to apply the knowledge of the course into the real world context is tested hence the ability of thinking both creatively and rationally is the essential. In the class, the contents in the book are delivered to students first, and then they have the group discussions with their teachers. In the discussions, students can freely express their opinions on the topics but for the irrational opinion, teachers explain them why their opinions are irrational and try to lead them to think not just creatively but also rationally.

 

2.       Coursework – they start research from the middle school

From the middle school process, the British students must submit the coursework for their year exam. What they do could vary depending on the subjects, but mainly, they need to do some research on the topics they have learnt. In the research, they collect the data by doing their own survey and write the report which contains the analysis and the conclusion based on them. With this process, the students can apply what they have learnt into the real practice, rather than accepting and memorizing the contents passively. In addition, this process can give the students some ideas of which careers they will do in the future specifically.

 

3.       Independent Spirit and Self management skills training

In the private school of the England, the students live on the residence, which is often called “house” with a unique name. They learn how to live with other people together and how to manage themselves with a specified plan. The house master tries to help the students to stand upright and to have the independent spirit with self management skill. They always care for the students and do their best to be the supporter of the students.

 

With the British education, learning English is not the only thing that you gain, but you gain creative and rational thinking way with independent spirit and self management skill. 왜 반드시 영국 교육이어야 하는가?

 

영국은 오랜 전통과 역사와 함께 신사의 나라로 잘 알려져 있다. 그 고유함과 우수성에도 불구하고 영국교육은 미국교육에 비해 우리나라에 잘 알려져 있지 않다. 그러나 옥스포드나 캠프리지 같은 대학들이 당당하게 세계10위권 안에 그 이름을 올리고 있고 영국의 많은 대학들이 세계적인 명성을 가지고 있다는 사실을 고려할 때에 영국 교육은 세계에서 최고의 교육시스템임에 틀림이 없다.

 

그러면 과연 무엇이 과연 영국 교육을 특별하고 구별되게 하는가?

1. 영국교육은 창의적이면서도 합리적인 생각에 중점을 둔다

한국교육은 물론, 선진교육의 대표로 일컬어지는 미국 교육에서조차 시험에서 객관식 문제의 출제비율이 매우 높다. 이러한 객관식 문제들은 그저 책으로부터 지식을 학생들이 암기하기만 하면 풀 수 있다. 그러나 영국 교육의 시험에서는 객관식 문제가 없다. 모든 질문은 서술형이며 따라서 단순히 책을 암기한다고 해서 결코 높은 점수를 받을 수 없다. 시험에서는 코스에서 배운 내용들을 실제 세계에 적용할 수 있는 능력이 평가되며 따라서 창의적이고 합리적으로 생각할 수 있는 능력이 필수로 요구되어진다. 수업에서는 학생들에게 먼저 책에 있는 지식들이 전달되며 그 후에 선생님과의 그룹 토론을 한다. 학생들은 토론에서 자유롭게 자신들의 의견을 표현할 수 있지만 불합리한 의견들에 대해서는 선생님들이 그들의 의견이 왜 불합리한지를 설명하며 학생들이 창의적이면서도 합리적으로 사고할 수 있도록 유도한다.

 

2. 코스워크 – 중학교부터 연구를 시작한다.

중학교 때부터, 영국의 학생들은 그들의 시험을 위해 코스워크를 제출하게 된다. 무엇을 하는 지는 과목에 따라서 달라질 수 있지만 대부분 주로 그들이 배운 내용에 대해 어떤 연구를 하는 것이다. 그들은 연구를 위해 그들 스스로 자료를 조사하며 그것을 바탕으로 작성된 분석 및 결론이 포함된 리포트를 제출하게 된다. 이러한 과정과 함께 학생들은 그들이 배운 내용을 단순히 수동적으로 반복하고 기억하는 것을 넘어서 실제 삶에 적용해 볼 수 있게 된다. 뿐만 아니라 이러한 과정은 학생이 자신의 미래 직업선택에 대한 구체적인 아이디어를 제공하기도 한다.

 

3. 독립심과 자기관리능력 배양

영국의 사립학교에서는 학생들이 보통 어떤 특정한 이름의 하우스라고 불리는 기숙사에서 거주하게 된다. 그들은 다른 사람들과 함께 사는 법과 그들 스스로를 구체적인 계획과 함께 관리하는 법을 배우게 된다. 기숙사 사감은 학생들이 제대로 당당하게 설 수 있도록 도우며 독립심과 자기관리능력을 가질 수 있도록 돕는다. 그들은 항상 학생들을 보호하고 관심을 가지며 학생들의 지원자가 되기 위해 최선을 다한다.
